Large, thick, white stalks with slight bulbs at base. Shanks up to 8″ long and 2″ in diameter. Mild onion flavor is delicious in soups and stews. GARDEN HINTS: Draw soil up around plants as they elongate to blanch stems and improve quality. Seeds can be started indoors 6 to 10 weeks before outdoor planting time. Before transfer to garden, acclimate plants to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered area outside for a week.
